Journal 1 "I used to..."
|
Complete five statements in the form of "I used to..., but now..."

August 4, 2003
        1.    I used to watch people drive, but now I am among the impatient, honking
throng.
        2.    I used to dream of visiting Europe, but now I have lived there, learned
there, loved there,
              and grown there...twice.
        3.    I used to wear only--absolutely only--pink, but now it merely complements
my wardrobe.
        4.    I used to quote "a bacon, bacon cheeseburger" as my favorite cuisine,
but now my love
of animals has pushed me into steadfast vegetarianism.
        5.    I used to take pictures, but now I photograph images with leading lines,
balance, framing,
              and rule-of-thirds composition.
Further development of one statement:
I used to quote "a bacon, bacon cheeseburger" as my favorite cuisine, but now my ardent love
for animals has pushed me into steadfast vegetarianism. Spurred by bad airplane chicken, two summers ago I decided to take
the plunge into a meatless diet. It was not as difficult as I anticipated, for meatless alternatives to bacon, hot dogs,
hamburgers, and ground beef are readily available. There is, however, no substitute for marshmallows and all things gummi--namely
bears and worms--which drives me crazy! I have currently been a member of the "elite who don't
eat meat" for 22 months and, while I occasionally pine for s'mores and a succulent chicken breast, I don't intend to ever
go back to being an omnivore.

Writer's Reflection: This journal really reflected some of my strong personal beliefs
and passions, including traveling, Europe, photograpy, vegetarianism, and, of course, the color pink! I think this writing
is unique to me alone, and that is one of the neatest things about creating a group of statements like this--no two people's
will be alike! It is also a good way to get to know someone, as well as initiate conversation, fitting attributes for our
first journal of the year. This piece also opened my eyes to how I have changed over time, in terms of maturing, attaining
new privileges, and making decisions.
